Identify Any Faulty Device Driver in Your Computer

If you are facing problems with your computer, especially the blue error screen coming up again and again, or your system is only booting in safe mode, then there is a strong possibility that your computer is having a faulty device driver.

Now how to identify a faulty driver, if you look at the list of drivers, you will find more than 100 drivers, and its not easy to find the faulty drivers from that list, neither it is possible to reinstall each one.

Microsoft provides you with the solution by providing a little tool called Verifier. This allows you to check which driver is faulty and a error message that will help you know which driver is faulty and you can then replace it or reinstall it. Here is a look at the use of it.

1. Go to Start –> Run and type “verifier“.

2. Select first option of “Create Standard Settings”, click Next, and then choose the option according to the problem you are facing. If you are technical enough, you can select “Select drivers name from a list”, and choose the driver which you think is responsible for the problem. If you are not sure then you can select “Automatically select all drivers installed on this computer”. and then Click Next, and Finish the process.

3. Now Reboot your computer, you will see the list of drivers to be verified at startup, and if you have a faulty driver, then you will get a blue screen, with the error message. You can get the faulty driver from that and thus can reinstall it or can be rectified.

4. After this when you have recognized the faulty driver, login back in your windows and you need to stop this service. To do this, Go to Start –> Run and type in “verifier /reset“. This will stop this service and you will not get the verifier window at startup again.

MS OFFICE TIPS And TRICKS

  1. Ribbon in Office 2007

Ribbon is one of the notable changes in Office 2007. Ribbon occupies lot of space on the top of all programs. Although the ribbon has lot of features built into it, sometimes it can be annoying to have too big header. For this the Ribbon can be turned off as well.

There are many ways to turn the Ribbon off.

  • Click the down arrow to the right of Quick access toolbar and then select minimize the Ribbon option.

  • Second option is much simpler than the first one, all you need is to double click the current active tab on the ribbon. The ribbon disappears and double click again to get it back.
  • Press Ctrl+ F1 and ribbon becomes invisible. Clicking Ctrl+F1 again will make it active.

Hope you enjoyed reading this tip.

2. How to Access Macros Settings in Office 2007

Office 2007 has lot of improvements over the previous version and the notable feature is the ribbon where the menus and controls have been rearranged. Macros settings is one toolbar which is missing in the new Office 2007 format. In Office 2003, one can access Macros directly from Tools-> Macros, but in latest version of Office, its rearranged into developer toolbar which is not displayed in Office ribbon by default.

To access Macros in Office 2007, click on the Office icon on the top left hand corner and select Word Options or Excel options based on the program you are using. In the Options window, select the Popular tab and check the box against “Show Developer Tab in ribbon“.

Click ok and now you can see the developer tab in the ribbon and Macros inside this tab.

How to Back-up FireFox Settings

Firefox has a config file which can be accessed by typing about:Config in the url section. This file is similar to Windows registry file as it contains information on the running of Firefox.

The config file contains lots of information which the users can change apart from the default value. But changing this value can also be dangerous in the sense that it can sometimes cause Firefox to stop working. So its better to take a backup of the settings file, so that in case you change any value and any error occurs, you can always restore Firefox back to normal state.

How to take the back-up: Taking a back up is simple process. Select Run in Windows and type %appdata%\mozilla\firefox\profiles. It shows a Windows folder which contains a folder which has a name like ati9z0wb.default (the name may not be same in all computers). Open the folder and then copy the file prefs.js to a safe location.

Should you mess something up in about:config file, simply close Firefox and copy the backup of prefs.js back to its original location.

  • you can also try Firefox Environment and Backup Extension which goes much beyond using manual intervention..

Scheduling a Dial-Up Connection(PPPOE TYPE) — Useful for BSNL BroadBand

Fed up of night(2-8) download plan of BSNL. Solution to this problem is very much simple and efficient. You just need to have your modem and pc on at night.

Software(139KB)– CiDial

Just fill in your username and password details and it will connect automatically.

Schedule Cidial.exe file with the scheduler at your desired time and it gets connected automatically, pc and modem being kept on.

NOTE:

The setup file has a trial version so a message box will come to purchase it. To overcome this problem I have kept a separate Cidial.exe icon which you should replace with the previous one(including program files, desktop). Schedule always with the new Cidial.exe icon placed in program files.

Scheduler

You can go for FREE BYTE TASK SCHEDULER(just Google it, its absolutely free) but its only for XP. For VISTAS, windows scheduler is very much up to the mark.

How To: Fix the “Open With” dialogue box when clicking on C: Drive

I came across this problem quite a few times whenever flash drives were used from one system to another.

This the best solution I have found while searching on the net.

SOLUTION

The behaviour seems to be caused by a virus infection which is fairly resistant to automatic cleaning. If you have already gone through the steps outlined here(Some Antiviruses to handle this problem) and the problem persists then you will have to remove the infection manually.

First up double click on My Computer, then click on Tools, Folder Options, click the View tab, and check the Show Hidden Files and Folders check box, uncheck the Hide Extensions box, and uncheck the Hide System Files checkbox. Now click ok.

Next open up the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete and clicking Task Manager. Now find every instance of WSCRIPT.EXE and right click on it and click End Process. Once you have killed all of those processes you will have to remove the infected files.

First go to Start, Search. Click on All Files and Folders. Now in the second blank put MS32DLL.dll.vbs, now click on More Advanced Options, make sure that Search System Folders, Search Hidden Files and Folders, and Search SubFolders are all checked. Click the Search button. After a few minutes the search should return several files named Autorun.inf. Delete all of these files.

Now go to C:\Windows and find a file named MS32DLL.dll.vbs and delete it.

Now we have to remove two registry entries. To do so copy the following lines into Notepad and save the file to your desktop as fixopen.reg. When you save it make sure you choose All Files from the drop down box or Notepad will make it a .txt file instead.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Window Title"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run]
"ms32dll"=-

Now double click on the fixopen.reg file and say Yes to the changes.

We’re almost done, just a couple of things left. Go to Start, Run, and type GPEDIT.MSC and click ok. Now on the screen that pops up go to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, System and double click on Turn Off Autoplay. Now in the new window select ENABLE and then choose All Drives. Now click ok and close the GPEDIT window.

The final step is to go to Start, Run, type MSCONFIG, and click ok. Then click on the Startup tab and find MS32DLL and uncheck it. Now click ok and reboot your PC.

Your C drive should open up normally now with no further trouble.
